News: Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata says that to sell the Wii U at a reasonable price for consumers, Nintendo will actually have to lose money on initial Wii U sales.

The Nintendo Wii U might cost you £210, but it will cost Nintendo too. According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, Nintendo will actually be losing money on the Wii U at launch.

“The Wii U hardware will have a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits early after the launch,” Iwata said (according to GamesIndustry), “because rather than determining a price based on its manufacturing cost, we selected one that consumers would consider to be reasonable.”

Iwata is confident that the company will be back to making “Nintendo-like” profits soon through strong Wii U and 3DS sales. Nintendo is also still counting on the Wii, with two new bundles now available for the holidays. According to Iwata, Nintendo is hoping to sell 5.5 million Wii U consoles in the first fiscal year, and 24 million units of Wii U software… a prediction that Michael Patcher would disagree with.

It won’t be long until we can see for ourselves who’s right – the Nintendo Wii U comes out November 18 (November 30 in Europe). Until then, keep an eye on Wii U news right here on BeefJack.
