General Electric (NYSE:GE), Alcoa (NYSE:AA), Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Lockheed-Martin (NYSE:LMT) have all committed to the “Get Skills to Work Coalition,” reports Reuters. The coalition aims to help returning veterans convert their military skills into equivalent civilian job functions. GE is providing an initial $6 million in funding for the program.

Run by the Manufacturing Institute, the new program will begin in January at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College in Ohio. Nine more locations will be added during 2013. Veterans will be trained in manufacturing skills, and employers will be able to recruit and manage worker development. The program will also create on-the-job training programs in select cities.

Reuters cited a study by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte showing that the U.S. now has more than 600,000 unfilled manufacturing jobs due to lack of qualified workers. Combine that with an anticipated 2.5 million manufacturing job vacancies over the next five years, and the program is a priority for the companies involved.
